Keep It Away From Moisture and Chemicals (The Biggest Enemies)
This is the most critical step. The base metals and thin platings on artificial jewelry react very quickly to liquids and chemicals.
Water is a No-Go: Never wear your jewelry while showering, swimming, washing dishes, or even washing your hands. The moisture can cause the metal to rust or tarnish and can weaken the glue holding stones in place.
Avoid Sweat: The salt and acid in your sweat are corrosive. Avoid wearing your jewelry to the gym, while exercising, or on extremely hot and humid days.
Steer Clear of Chemicals: Apply your perfume, lotions, hairspray, makeup, and sunscreen before you put on your jewelry. Let them dry completely first. The chemicals in these products can cause the plating to fade, corrode, or change color permanently.
Smart Storage is Key: How you store your jewellery is just as important as how you wear it.
Prevent Scratches and Tangles: Store each piece individually. Tangled chains can break, and pieces rubbing against each other can cause scratches that wear away the plating.
Use Pouches or Bags: The best way is to keep them in small, individual zip-lock plastic bags. Squeeze out the excess air before sealing. This prevents contact with the air, which slows down tarnishing. Soft cloth pouches also work well.
Keep it Dry: Store your jewelry in a dry place, away from humidity. The bathroom is the worst place to keep it. A drawer or a dedicated jewelry box is ideal. For extra protection, you can even toss in a small silica gel packet (the kind that comes in shoe boxes) to absorb moisture.
